The Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) is a regional initiative that brings together various stakeholders to discuss and address internet-related issues in Africa. It serves as a platform for governments, civil society organizations, academia, private sector representatives, and technical communities to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaboration on matters concerning Internet governance. First organised in 2011 the African Internet Governance Forum host the five (5) regional Internet Governance Forum initiatives regions of Africa.

It is dedicated to fostering open and inclusive dialogue on Internet governance issues that impact Africa. We aim to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and informed decision-making among diverse stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, academia, private sector entities, and technical communities.
We envision an Internet ecosystem in Africa that is accessible, secure, and beneficial to all. Through our efforts, we strive to strengthen digital rights, ensure a robust and reliable Internet infrastructure, and empower African communities to harness the full potential of the digital revolution.

The African Internet Governance Forum was established during the global IGF held in Nairobi in 2011. This year, 2023 marked the 12th Forum held. It took place in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. Nigeria. It ran from the 19th - 21st of September, 2023.
Did you know that there are 54 African countries?

This year's AfIGF hosted all the countries, as people all over Africa attended this year's conference and had their individual countries represented. As a result, we had packs of playing cards printed and distributed as one of the souvenirs in the event. The 56 cards in the playing box (with the Joker Cards included) represented the 54 countries in Africa, individually.
Did you know that three sets of African countries have similar names?

The first set is the Congos. Officially known as the Republic of the Congo, the country is often called Congo (Brazzaville), with its capital added parenthetically, to distinguish it from neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is often referred to by its acronym, the DRC, or called Congo (Kinshasa). The Republic of Congo is located in the center of the African continent, while The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country located in Central Africa with a short Atlantic Ocean coastline.

Secondly, we have the Sudans. The Sudans (also known as the two Sudans or just Sudan) is a region in Northeast Africa comprising the sovereign countries of Sudan and South Sudan.

We have the Guineas. They include Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, and Guinea. They are all located in West Africa.
The 2023 edition of the Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) was themed “Transforming Africa’s Digital Landscape”. Under the theme of "Transforming Africa's Digital Landscape: Empowering Inclusion, Security, and Innovation," the Africa IGF aims to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the rapidly evolving digital landscape. It focuses on empowering inclusivity, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures, and promoting innovation across the continent.
